CutPeak Energy × Renua Energy: Cold-Climate Storage, Made in New York

CutPeak Energy (DevCo) and Renua Energy (EPC) are partnering to deploy behind-the-meter battery energy storage systems (BESS) that perform in sub-freezing conditions— batteries for ski areas and other winter-peaking sites across New York. Renua is a New York–certified SDVOB and federally certified SDVOSB.

Why now

Snowmaking often dominates a resort’s energy bill and is a significant operating expense—especially early season—so shaving winter peaks and shifting load is survival, not a nice-to-have. (More context: Vermont Public, historical: ESPN.)

What we’re building—together

  • Battery-paired snowmaking & peak shaving to flatten winter demand while unlocking grid-service revenue where available.
  • Live-ops validation for empirical data at customer sites to prove savings, uptime, and longer snow windows before investment.
  • Commercialization pathways for NY-grown storage tech via real hosts, real data, pilot sites, and faster lab-to-market commercialization in support of initiatives to further US-based technology. Who does what

  • CutPeak: originates, structures, manages, and maintains the assets, then operates systems through the life of the project.
  • Renua: engineers, permits, and constructs turnkey BESS/EVSE/PV across the Northeast—delivered by a veteran-owned, New York-certified team. Learn more: EPC services.

Why New York

We have the New York battery belt: a tight corridor of research, manufacturing/recycling, and policy that shortens the lab-to-market ramp.

Federal tailwinds. New investment is flowing into Upstate battery R&D and commercialization—positioning the region as a national hub.

Research depth. Upstate is home to Nobel laureate M. Stanley Whittingham and Binghamton’s storage programs, plus the regional Upstate NY Energy Storage Engine initiative building a full stack from materials to safety and workforce.

Manufacturing & recycling footprint. The Rochester hub anchors large-scale Li-ion recycling capacity (assets now under Glencore), reinforcing a local supply chain for cathode materials and recovery.

Industry cluster. NY-BEST convenes manufacturers, integrators, utilities, and universities—greasing the skids for pilots and procurement.

Policy & market signals. New York targets 6 GW of storage by 2030 with bankable VDER/Value Stack compensation that rewards distributed assets.

The bottom line

Cold weather isn’t a niche—it’s the stress test for storage and a priority for our nation’s resiliency. With CutPeak’s development + asset-management model and Renua’s SDVOB EPC delivery, we’re building projects that shave peaks, widen snow windows, and prove bankable performance in the toughest conditions—right here in New York.
